This chap guards the entrance to Karekare beach one of my favourite spots in Waitakere (West Auckland) and a place of spiritual sigificance to me. The west coast of Waitakere boasts spectacular black sand beaches, a biting wind and a sense of wildness not found on the more popular eastern and northern beaches of Auckland. Less pairs of black jeans are also sold in these areas! It seemed an appropriate place to visit before I move back to Waitakere next week. Cathy and I braved Lone Kauri Road to reach the beach as the main road had major slips from storms. Fun and reckless all at the same time!
